What It Takes to be a Daycare Operator in your Own Home
The demand for daycares is steadily increasing as more parents of preschool age children are returning to work. Some figures estimate that two thirds of all children under the age of six are cared for by someone other than their parents during the daytime hours. With this said, it is easy to see that running a daycare from your home has the potential to be very profitable.
Taking care of children can be a rewarding and challenging career and can be done from your own home. You can be a daycare operator for a small home daycare with only a handful of children, or you can open a daycare center to care for a larger amount of children. No matter what size child care facility you choose to run, there are a few things to consider first.
The first step in becoming a home daycare operator is to understand what makes them profitable. You should check with your states and local government regulations concerning minimum area requirements per child. This dictates how many children you can care for both inside and outside of your home. There are usually regulations about the amount of meals or snacks that must be provided in an eight-hour day. You should take these regulations seriously and determine whether or not your home run daycare will be able to turn a profit while meeting the minimum standards of care.
Also, keep in mind that if you plan on running a larger child care center, there are usually regulations governing the amount of children per every adult on the premises. This should be an important consideration as well.
Next, you should acquire the appropriate training in meeting the different needs of children. This includes the physical needs such as safety, sleeping, feeding, and proper hygiene, as well as emotional and intellectual needs such as teaching, social interaction, playtime, and schedules. You should also become savvy in behavior management techniques, how to care for sick children, and kids with special needs, and what to do in the case of an emergency.
You should also consider becoming a licensed daycare operator. Attempt to get all appropriate certifications and training in order to develop the skills that you will need to run a healthy, profitable child care facility.
Next you will need to decide what age of children you feel comfortable caring for at your home based daycare. Keep in mind the special needs surrounding infants, toddlers, and preschool age children.
Next, you will need to determine the hours or operation for your home daycare. Most daycares operate from 6 am to 6 pm, you will need to decide whether these hours will work for you and whether they work well for the community you will serve. You also need to determine whether you will offer an after school care program, if you will offer part time care, or over night care.
You also have to decide on a name for your home run daycare, and get the necessary insurance for the business. Then you will want to start marketing the daycare. Advertise your facility at churches, parks, the zoo, and anywhere else that is family oriented. Be ready to answer parent’s questions concerning your facility and be prepared to give them a tour of your home if they request it.
If you have a large response to your marketing you may have to be selective about whom you choose to care for. This means that you will need to be ready to interview potential parents and children and have a selection process set up.
You should also be prepared to communicate with parents on a regular basis. You may want to set up a newsletter, progress reports, or daily charts for the parents to review.
In addition, you should determine how much you will charge for your services, and whether or not you will charge by the hour, day, or week. Decide whether you will give receipts, whether you will accept government subsidies, whether you will enforce late fees, and your policies on returned checks and fee increases.
