Top Eight Myths about Airfare and Airline Travel

There are many myths about traveling that have recently become debunked. Knowing the truth about these misleading, and previously believed details can make traveling more economical. Here are eight myths about airline travel.

Airfare Secrets Exposed: How to Find the Lowest Fares Available Anywhere!

Some people assume it’s always best to spend frequent flier miles before spending actual money. This is not always the case. If you equate each frequent flier mile to $.01, often times you will end up spending more on flights using the miles. Furthermore, frequent flier miles are hard to collect and when travelers decide to use them, they should make sure they are getting the most out of them.

Also, some travelers assume you can always change the name on an airline ticket. While a few airlines will allow the change at a nominal fee, generally no such change can be made. This is a myth that most passengers find out the hard way.

Another misunderstanding amongst airline passengers is that you can make reservations more than a year in advance. While most airlines encourage booking your flight early (for their convenience and inventory tracking) their computer systems will not process a reservation more than a year away. Travelers you can request a specific trip date, but tickets will not be confirmed and usually no price can be estimated.

Another myth that most travelers are misled by is that airlines will accept tickets from another airline if you are traveling between the same airports. Passengers can not assume that all airlines have ticketing agreements with each other. With electronic ticketing becoming more popular this agreements are far less likely.

Another popular myth is travelers assume that they can upgrade their tickets for a nominal fee. Some domestic flights may offer this, but for the most part airlines refrain from these type upgrades, especially on international flights. Some airlines would rather let the seats remain empty than offer them at a lower price.

Some travelers are still under the assumption that a Saturday over night stay will lower the cost of their trip. While this may have been true a decade ago, currently airlines rarely push the Saturday night stay over any longer. Previously this was used to push business fliers, who often fly at the last minute, to choose an overnight stay instead of an outrageous ticket price. This requirement is becoming so infrequent because of the many options travelers have when choosing an airline. The rise of budget airlines means staying overnight rarely saves the flier money.

Another popular myth is that travelers always have a choice of booking a one way ticket instead of a roundtrip. While this may be true domestically it is not always the case when flying internationally. Without proof of a roundtrip ticket many foreign countries will refuse a traveler entry.

The last myth is that airlines can change a ticket booked by a travel agency. Regrettably, this is not always the case. Usually a travel agent owns the rights to your file and in those cases the airlines simply have access to the reservations but can make no changes. Or, you may be booked on more than one airline with specific flight routing that got you the airfare you wanted.

Keep in mind when considering these myths that not all airlines follow the same rules, so it is always best to ask if you’re not sure on an airline’s specific regulations.

Booking your Flight – Smart Ways to Negotiate a Better Deal

It never hurts to ask, many people say. This is true in almost any situation, and it includes that of negotiating deals on airline tickets. There are varieties of ways airline deals can be negotiated.

Your Guide to Traveling Well on a Limited Budget

In order to know how to negotiate you may first need to do some research regarding airline flight prices. Then, you will want to find out which airlines are offering the best deals at the best times. Furthermore, you can learn more about the various travel agencies through whom you can purchase travel tickets.

Once you have done some research then you may decide to make your move. You can either just book a deal online after some careful research or you can book over the phone, and negotiate even more carefully. Either way is acceptable, depending upon how much time you have.

In order to receive the best discount prices on airline deals you will need to need to have both the qualities of persistence as well as flexibility. This is true whether you do your booking and/or negotiating online, telephone or in person.

For example, if you choose to correspond with travel agents via e-mail, you will need to know which questions to ask and be willing to wait for a response. You also need to know now to not give up until you are satisfied you have landed the best deal out there.

Furthermore, you will need to know what questions to ask to get the answers you want. For example, you will need to ask which days are the best outgoing days (where you can receive the cheapest price) and which days are the best return trip days. For example, sometimes even one day can make a difference between paying $500 for a domestic plane ticket and $300 for a ticket. You may need to be able to be bold enough to ask other questions as well.

One other question you may want to ask is if the airline or agency that you are consulting has any group rates or any companion rates. Purchasing more than one ticket usually results in a price cut for a couple or even an entire group. There may be a certain policy regarding this, such as a certain deposit amount being needed, or the entire price may be needed to be paid up front for this group discount.

Upon learning about various group and individual discounts, travelers need to be aware of additional information as well. For example, anyone traveling by plane, especially if receiving a discount, various rules apply.

One rule that applies to discount travelers is that regarding the amount of luggage that is allowed. Furthermore, those who travel by plane may also need to be aware that some items are banned on airplanes. The rules pertaining to luggage may be different depending upon the airline or airport.

Another rule that applies regarding discount travel is that sometimes travel is only allowed on certain dates. This may be a tough one to negotiate, and is often set as such. However, there usually are still quite a few days during which a person can travel and still receive a discount.

If you are traveling at the last minute and are looking for an airline deal, sometimes you can make out on last minute cancellations. These are the times when the fare is exceptionally lower than it is normally when purchasing tickets at the last minute, which are usually expensive.

How To Find Cheap Airline Tickets

You may also be able to negotiate deals on airline tickets that are purchased in advance. In fact, some airlines allow you to reserve them up to 320 days a head of time. If you know for sure you are going to travel on a specific day this can be a great way for you to save money.

Another way to receive a discount on an airline ticket is to purchase it in a package along with hotel accommodations and other travel needs. If a student has a specific location other than home this could be another alternative for them to save money on their long trips.

Avoid Peak Time Travel and Save Money on Your Flight

Just like the roads, the airways have busy, peak travel times. Avoiding the peak travel periods on the roads has the benefit of avoiding the frustration of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic, going nowhere fast. Avoiding the peak travel periods on airlines has the benefit of saving you a lot of cash. Choose your travel times wisely, and you could save a bundle on that pricey airfare.

Discount Airfares : The Insiders’ Guide, How to Save Up to 75% on Airline Tickets 2nd Edition

There are actually a few different kinds of peak travel times. The first peak travel time is the time of day itself. Mid-mornings and mid-afternoons are busy for the same reason the roads fill up during rush hours. These flights are usually packed with business travelers who are flying out of town for meetings in the morning, and flying back home in the afternoons before dinner.

To save some money, skip the business traveler’s routine and consider taking a flight during less busy times. Very early morning and very late night departures or arrivals are not a lot of fun, but they may be the cheapest tickets going. Also look for flights that take of in the late morning or early afternoon, when the business travelers are likely to be working. There may be empty seats on these flights you can get for a bargain price.

Another type of peak travel is the day of the week. Mondays and Friday are the most expensive days to fly, again because of business travelers. These are the days for heading out for work trips and heading back home again. Tuesday and Wednesday, by comparison, are the cheapest days to fly because the demand for seats is the lowest on these days. If you can fly mid week, do it. Your savings may be significant. If possible, you should also include a Saturday stay in your trip. If you stay over a Saturday night, the flight will be considered an “excursion” fare rather than a “business” fare, so the price will be less expensive.

The other type of peak travel is the season or time of year you travel. The peak travel period is different depending on the destination. To figure out what is the peak travel period is for your destination, ask yourself when the tourists are most likely to flock there, and there you have your peak season. For instance, Americans often travel to London in the summer when school is out and the London weather is nice.

Significantly fewer people want to travel to London in February, when the weather is cold and rainy. The opposite is true of the Caribbean. The winter is peak season, thanks to the influx of tourists fleeing their own cold winter weather, but tourists often avoid the area during the summer because of the soaring temperature and the threat of hurricanes. That doesn’t mean that visiting places in the off-season is unpleasant. It actually has its benefits in major tourist destinations, where you won’t be fighting the crowds to see the sites or waiting in long lines to get a table at a restaurant. Many local attractions also have sales in the off-season, so you may find extra bargains when you get there.

Airline Travel Information

If you have the freedom to plan your trips around these peak travel times, the reward could be a discount of several hundred dollars on your plane ticket. For many travelers, it could be well worth the convenience you forgo to save a significant amount of money on your ticket. Beat the crowds and line your pockets with your savings!
